The ATP Romanian Open was last held in 2016 before it moved to Budapest for the Hungarian Open. It now returns to the Romanian capital of Bucharest for what would also be called the Tiriac Open for sponsorship reasons.
This ATP 250 event will see a main draw of 28 singles players and 16 doubles teams and will be played across the third week of April. Featured as one of the tournaments in the clay swing leading up to the French Open, one can expect some of the top tennis players in the world to take part.
When it was first hosted as the Romanian Open in 1993, it was called the BRD Năstase Țiriac Trophy, with two of the best Romanian players named in it.
In its original avatar which was held between 1993 and 2016, only one player – Gilles Simon – won this title more than once. He grabbed it three times.

What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the Romanian Open?
Marton Fucsovics lifted the 2024 title at the Bucharest Open by overcoming surprise finalist Mariano Navone in the title-decider. The unseeded Fucsovics came away a 6-4, 7-5 winner over his fifth seeded opponent.
This was after Navone had dispatched the top seeded Francisco Cerundolo in the quarterfinals while Fucsovics routed the second seeded Tallon Griekspoor 7-5, 6-1.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the Romanian Open?
The ATP Romanian Open wasn’t held in 2023, having been played between 1993 and 2016 before getting shifted to Budapest for the Hungarian Open.
In the three editions of the Hungarian Open which were held in 2017, 2018 and 2019, Lucas Pouille, Marco Cecchinato and Matteo Berrettini emerged as the title winners.
It was expected to be played in 2020 as well but was cancelled because of the pandemic and following that, the tournament was never held again.
