The men’s first round action at the Miami Open 2025 began on Wednesday and saw Gael Monfils become the second-oldest man to win a round here and Nick Kyrgios and Alexander Bublik get involved in rare wins.
In a match that tested Monfils’ resolve, he was taken to three sets by Fabian Marozsan before coming through thanks to his 38 winners. The 38-year-old became the second-oldest after Jimmy Connors to win a match in Miami.
He will be joined by Australia’s Nick Kyrgios who won his first match at this level since 2022. Having been out of action after being beset by injury issues, Kyrgios had already retired from a match earlier this month in Indian Wells, bemoaning his inability to even finish off an encounter.
This time around Kyrgios clinched a place in the second round with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Mackenzie McDonald and will now face Karen Khachanov in the second. Also winning his first match in an outdoor hardcourt match was Alexander Bublik who was coming off some respite with a finals appearance in a Challenger event last week.
Bublik crushed Sebastian Baez 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round where he takes on Tommy Paul.
Among the other winners were David Goffin who overcame Aleksandar Vukic to set up a meeting with Carlos Alcaraz, Rinky Hijikata who defeated Hamad Medjedovic to now face Novak Djokovic and Tristan Schoolkate who had no worries against Ethan Quinn.
Britain’s Billy Harris failed to progress to the second round after he fell to Eliot Spizzirri in their opener, losing in three sets. Spizzirri will now face the fellow American and 24th seed Sebastian Korda.
Federico Cina, who is just 17 years old, also grabbed a maiden win at this level as he came through against Francisco Comesana 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2).
