Danielle Collins v Ons Jabeur Preview

Head-to-Head: There have been four previous meetings between these two players with Collins leading 3-1. Collins won at the 2020 French Open, 2022 Miami Open and 2024 Charleston Open while Jabeur’s only victory came at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.

Following her title wins at Miami and Charleston last year in what was expected to be final tennis season, Collins has returned back to feature in another year as she looks to take care of her health issues in the process.

In her first match of the year, the world number 11 Collins will be up against a player looking to get her form back. Jabeur might have fallen to 40th on the WTA charts but she has been a former world number two and a two-time Wimbledon runner-up.

And while Collins will be playing her first match of the season, Jabeur is coming off a solid showing at the Brisbane International last week where she won three successive matches to reach the quarterfinal. In the end, the younger legs of Mirra Andreeva proved to be too much for her to handle but Jabeur had shown she is back.

Here Jabeur starts a favourite and we believe she can live up to those expectations even against a player ranked nearly 30 places above her.

Collins v Jabeur prediction: Jabeur to win: 4/6

Anna Kalinskaya v Belinda Bencic Preview

Head-to-Head: There have been three previous match-ups between these two players and Bencic has won them all. The Swiss player beat Kalinskaya at Rosmalen and Berlin in 2022 on grass and then overcame her in Adelaide in 2023 as well.

Kalinskaya touched a career-high ranking of 11th in the world last season which is great news for her but also means that she will now need to perform as well as she did last season to retain those points. It’s the following up of a good season that is a difficult task and Kalinskaya will find that soon.

She has already featured in a tournament this year when she took to court at the Brisbane International and the Russian was shocked in the very first round by Ashlyn Krueger.

While Kalinskaya did make it to the finals of the doubles competition, things would be a lot different when she returns to court here in her singles opener. More so because she is up against an opponent who is 3-0 against her.

This isn’t to say Benlinda Bencic doesn’t have her own problems having returned to the circuit following the birth of her child. She already found that out at the United Cup where she was crushed 6-1, 6-1 by Jasmine Paolini but has done well to win both her qualifiers here to make it to the main draw.

This could be a tricky one to call though with neither player looking to be at the top of the game but Kalinskaya, at 11/10, could be a tempting option.

Kalinskaya v Bencic prediction: Kalinskaya to win: 11/10

Jelena Ostapenko v Magdalena Frech Preview

Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came on the grass court of Birmingham where Ostapenko defeated Frech in three sets.

In a battle between a player ranked 17th in the world as Jelena Ostapenko is and a 24th-ranked player Magdalena Frech, it’s often tough to call a winner.

Especially when both players are coming off first round losses in the first tournament they featured in last week.

Ostapenko was sent packing by Marie Bouzkova in her Brisbane opener while Frech lost to Suzan Lamens at that very competition. The only difference is that Bouzkova’s form and ranking had warranted her to go into that match as a favourite while Lamens was a rank outsider.

Which, combined with Ostapenko’s experience and the fact that she had won this competition last year, make her a favourite to grab this win.

Ostapenko v Frech prediction: Ostapenko to win: 4/6

Beatriz Haddad Maia v Madison Keys Preview

Head-to-Head: There have been four previous meetings between these two, of which three came in 2024. It’s 2-2 on head to head between Haddad Maia and Keys. It’s also 2-1 for Haddad Maia on hardcourt surfaces.

Once ranked 10th in the world, Haddad Maia had fallen a bit to 16th and that follows a poor start to the season for the Brazilian.

Featuring for her country in her United Cup ties against China and Germany, Haddad Maia lost both her matches in the first week of the season. Which is rather shocking given that her opponents, Gao Xinyu and Laura Siegemund were 27/5 and 2/1 underdogs going into those matches.

This could well be the striking detail for Madison Keys heading into the encounter who herself had a decent start in Auckland. Keys was the top seed there and made the quarterfinal before losing to Clara Tauson, the eventual title winner.

No surprises then that Keys is 2/5 to win this.

Haddad Maia v Keys prediction: Keys to win: 2/5
