Alex de Minaur v Tristan Boyer Preview
Head-to-Head: De Minaur and Boyer have never faced off before this.
Having started a whopping 1/14 favourite in his opener against Botic van de Zandschulp, Alex de Minaur lived up to those expectations by winning it in straight sets.
De Minaur was off to a rollicking start with two breaks of serve in the very first two attempts before van de Zandschulp managed to arrest the bleeding.
He went a break up in the second set too but was broken back and even faced two set-points off his own serve at 4-5. From there on though, the Aussie broke right back to win the second set and then once more in the third to clinch a straight-set victory.
This was de Minaur’s third successive win to kick-start the season having earlier won both his singles matches at the United Cup.
He now takes on American qualifier Tristan Boyer, who is in his maiden Grand Slam main draw foray. And he’s already registered his first ever win here, beating Federico Coria in the opener.
It took Boyer some time, and five sets but he would have enjoyed every moment of his 6-3, 6-7 (3), 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory.
Things will be a lot different against de Minaur though, who we think should grab this win and make it to the third round.
de Minaur v Boyer prediction: de Minaur to win in straight sets: 1/2
Alex Michelsen v James McCabe Preview
Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came at the previous Australian Open with Michelsen winning in four.
Alex Michelsen entered the Australian Open this season ranked 42nd in the world, one away from his career-best. Last year he had made the third round in this tournament and a win here will ensure he’s not dropping any points on this campaign.
Michelsen’s target would be to go a lot deeper and having shocked Stefanos Tsitsipas in the opener, he would think he has a good chance now that the draw has opened up.
In a match lasting two hours and 45 minutes, Michelsen ended the world number 12’s stay in the competition, winning 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
This followed Michelsen’s second round defeat in Brisbane and a quarterfinal appearance at the Auckland Open to kick-start the season.
He faces Aussie wildcard entrant James McCabe who, in winning his opener against Martin Landaluce, had registered his first ever victory at ATP or Grand Slam level.
McCabe won 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 and that gets him closer to the top 200 of the rankings from its current 258th. That’s where his journey might end though.
Michelsen v McCabe prediction: Over 31.5 games in the match: 8/11
