Leylah Fernandez v Lulu Sun Head to Head
Fernandez and Sun have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Fernandez in a Tough Battle with Uchijima
While Leylah Fernandez was a 1/5 favourite heading into her first round match against Moyuka Uchijima, things did not go as planned.
If Fernandez was expecting this to be a quick battle, she was way off the mark with Uchijima fighting tooth and nail. It took Fernandez two hours and 10 minutes and two tie-breakers to get past her Japanese opponent who had come into the main draw as a lucky loser.
In a topsy-turvy encounter, both players lost their serves five times and while Fernandez saved a set-point in the opening set, she also squandered two match-points before it reached the second set tie-breaker.
Fernandez, who had entered the tournament on the back of a third round appearance at the Australian Open now has a good chance to make it successive wins again.

Sun Finally Wins a Match
Following a season to remember in 2024, Lulu Sun would have been looking forward to 2025 with bated breath but things haven’t quite gone her way. So far that it.
Coming into her opening round encounter here against Caroline Garcia, Sun had featured in four tournaments and lost in the first round at each of them.
Making matters worse for Sun is that those losses came to players who aren’t quite top 20 ones – Rebecca Marino, Sofia Kenin, Danka Kovinic and Sara Sorribes Tormo.
Which is why she went into her opener here as 6/4 underdog and yet, managed to notch up a crushing win over Garcia. She won 6-1, 6-3.
Can she continue this kind of form when she meets Fernandez?
Fernandez v Sun Prediction
While Sun would be relieved with her win last match, there’s a lot of work to be done and given the manner in which Fernandez has been shaping up this season, things could get a lot tougher. Backing the Canadian to clinch this but not before Sun has won a set.
