In what is her sixth appearance at the WTA Doha, Liudmilla Samsonova has finally won a main draw match.
She defeated Lulu Sun in straight sets to set up an interesting second round meeting with Jelena Ostapenko after having lost in her openers here in her last three appearances.
With defeats to Alize Cornet, Sofia Kenin and Leylah Fernandez over the past three seasons ending her journey early in Doha, Samsonova would have gone into her opener against Sun with some kind of unease.
Samsonova needn’t be worried though, she needed a mere hour and 29 minutes to register a 6-3, 6-3 victory in her opener.
What was interesting to see was Samsonova faced 11 break-points in the encounter and saved all of them. She earned three in return from Sun and broke every single time.

Ostapenko Finally Wins Easy (against Ito)
Aoi Ito has never been ranked in the top 100 and had made this tournament main draw as a qualifier. Jelena Ostapenko is a former world number five.
Which is why the odds of 9/20 for an Ostapenko win were both, an indicator of value and that of the kind of form the Latvian player has shown in the last few weeks.
Ostapenko had entered the match on the back of just one win from her previous five matches but this time around looked to be in fine fettle as she carved out a straight-set win over Ito.
In a match lasting a mere 55 minutes, Ostapenko won 17 of her 20 first serve points and broke Ito six times to win 6-2, 6-1 and reach the second round.
A semifinalist here in the 2022 edition, Ostapenko will now look to emulate her performances in this competition from 2023 and 2024 in which she had made the round of 16.
