Known for his performances on clay, Roberto Carballes Baena looked to have worked on his hardcourt game over the last 12 months and that showed in his results on that surface too.
While Carballes Baena was knocked out in the first round of the Hong Kong Open at the start of this season, he followed that up with a quarterfinal showing in Auckland and a third round appearance at the Australian Open.
Those were two performances that Carballes Baena would have been quite proud of.
Unfortunately for the Spaniard, his results have fallen off a tad since then. In the four tournaments that Carballes Baena has played since winning a Davis Cup singles match on February 1, he has gone down in the opening round at each of them.
Losses to the injury-stricken Michael Mmoh, 6/4 underdog Dusan Lajovic and Mariano Navone and Holger Rune would have pegged him back a tad.
The question is if he can now emulate his best ever showing at the Indian Wells Open where he has made the second round on two occasions before this.

O’Connell Needs to Start Win Matches
Australia’s Christopher O’Connell kick-started the season with the Australian Open swing, featuring in all the three tournaments that could have been done over the three-week period.
Unfortunately for O’Connell, he managed to win just one round – at the Adelaide International – when he overcame Arthur Rinderknech but other than that, he lost three matches.
What that meant was O’Connell was forced to play in the qualifiers at both, Doha and Dubai and he showed what he is capable of by getting to the main draw at both.
The Aussie then won his openers there, beating Hady Habib in Doha and was benefitted by Grigor Dimitrov’s fitness concerns in Dubai in the first round there. He lost the second round at both.
