Kartal Sends Haddad Maia Packing
In a result that sent shockwaves around but would have grabbed the attention of British tennis fans, Sonay Kartal shocked Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round of this tournament.
What made the win even more fascinating was the fact that Kartal, who has never been ranked better than 80th in the world, dropped just three games on her way to defeating the world number 17.
Kartal had made the tournament main draw as a lucky loser and then went past Varvara Lepchenko in the first round in straight sets.
