Leylah Fernandez v Ashlyn Krueger
World number 26 Leylah Fernandez will take on the 40th-ranked Ashlyn Krueger for a place in the fourth round and more interestingly what will be their fourth meeting. They had first faced off in June last year and in a matter of nine months, their head to head will soon read four matches played – a bit of a surprise.
And they are evenly matched despite the obvious difference in their ranking with with Krueger having won two of their three matches – at Toronto last year and in Abu Dhabi earlier this season. Fernandez’s only victory came at Eastbourne 2024.
Fernandez enters this encounter on the back of a hard-fought but eventually a straight-set win over Alycia Parks. In doing so, she broke a three-match losing streak that dated back over a month.
On the other hand, Krueger hit her career-best ranking of 40th last week and even if she loses this one, she might end up breaking into the top 35 with her third round appearance here.
Krueger has already gotten the better of Renata Zarazua and then stunned Elena Rybakina in this competition and given her form and her previous record against Fernandez, no surprises she starts a favourite here.
Fernandez v Krueger Tip: Krueger to win: 8/11
Ons Jabeur v Jasmine Paolini
This will be the fourth meeting between the seventh-ranked Jasmine Paolini and world number 30 Ons Jabeur and while the Tunisian leads 2-1 with wins at the 2022 Madrid Open and 2023 Wimbledon, it might not be enough to decide on who holds the edge.
The reason for that is they have never faced off in a hardcourt competition before this and they both hold a similar record on that surface. Jabeur enters this match on the back of an expected win over Katerina Siniakova while Paolini eased past Rebecca Sramkova, again making it very difficult to pick a winner in this one.
There’s not much separating the two players as far as their record for the season goes as well with Paolini (9-5) holding only a slight edge over Jabeur (12-7).
Which is why odds of 7/5 for a Paolini win look tempting enough to back her here.
Jabeur v Paolini: Paolini to win: 7/5
Magda Linette v Linda Fruhvirtova
This might be a match between a player ranked 34th in the world (Magda Linette) and another who is 215th, but as far as they are currently performing there’s not much to choose between them.
Linette had a 7-8 win-loss record for the season before she defeated Anastasia Pavlychenkova and Ekaterina Alexandrova to reach the third round here. Fruhvirtova, a former world number 49, on the other hand, had fallen off the radar for a while and was busy trying to get her ranking up by featuring on the ITF circuit.
She was forced to play in the qualifiers here where she overcame Rebecca Marino and Laura Siegemund and then overcame Claire Liu and shocked Beatriz Haddad Maia in the first two rounds here.
What’s interesting to note here is that Fruhvirtova’s winning odds in these four matches were 13/10, 7/5, 11/10 and 11/10 respectively and she still came through.
And much like that, she starts a 13/10 here as well and we expect her to hold an edge again.
Linette v Fruhvirtova Tip: Fruhvirtova to win: 13/10
