The 2025 Miami Open threw went according to script on Monday, March 24 with Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz easing to wins. A bit of a shock was Joao Fonseca losing to Alex de Minaur although neither was a favourite going into the encounter.
Zverev, who has made it to the final of this tournament once before, made a slow start to his third round match against Australia’s Jordan Thompson before he came through in straight sets.
The top seed won 7-5, 6-4, coming back from being 1-4 down in the first set to clinch eight of the following nine games against a player who had defeated him twice in the past.
In what turned out to be a ripper of a contest, Arthur Fils overcame Frances Tiafoe with the first set seeing him save six set-points. Tiafoe came back to win the second set after himself saving two match-points before Fils finished things off in the final set 6-2.
The match of the day turned out to be the one that was expected to be a close one as Alex de Minaur got over the line against the Next Gen Finals winner Joao Fonseca.
De Minaur battled both, his opponent and the partisan crowd supporting his Brazilian opponent in a comeback-from-behind 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 victory to advance to the fourth round.
The Aussie was forced to stop in his service motion when Fonseca’s fans continued to yell after the points were long over, and it went up to the extent of de Minaur getting booed when he eventually won the encounter. He later acknowledged he realised he needed to try and remain unaffected by the raucous crowd, adding, “just put your head down, do the work, and try to compete every single point”.
Tomas Machac ended the local, Reilly Opelka’s run, Jakub Mensik defeated Roman Safiullin, lucky loser Adam Walton overcame wildcard entrant Coleman Wong while Matteo Berrettini overcame Zizou Bergs in some of the other matches today.
