Alexander Zverev v Arthur Fils
World number two Alexander Zverev has this excellent opportunity to add an ATP 1000 title under his belt after the suspension of Jannik Sinner, an early ouster of Carlos Alcaraz and the struggles of Novak Djokovic make him the favourite.
First things first though, as he takes on the exciting and highly talented Arthur Fils for a place in the quarterfinals, a player whom Zverev has a 3-1 win-loss record against but with three of those matches having gone into the third set.
Their only match in a hardcourt competition came indoors in Paris last year and Zverev had squeezed past Fils there. Things have changed though with Zverev having struggled to get going this year since making it to the final of the Australian Open.
This is the fifth tournament Zverev is playing since that finals loss to Jannik Sinner and he is yet to win three in a row. Here, he has already gotten past Jacob Fearnley and Jordan Thompson but Fils could prove to be a bigger challenge than that.
The Frenchman, who entered this tournament with just one previous appearance in Miami – a first round exit last year – has already defeated Gabriel Diallo in the second round and then surprised Frances Tiafoe in the third. He had a chance to serve it out in straight sets against Tiafoe before taking the long route of a three-setter to come through.
Fils looks to be more battle-hardened than Zverev but at 21/10, his odds to win this open up a few options. Including the games handicap
Zverev v Fils Tip: Games Handicap Fils +4.5: 1/2
Alex de Minaur v Matteo Berrettini
Alex de Minaur will be facing off against Matteo Berrettini for the fourth time at this level and trails his opponent 1-2 on head to head. Both his defeats, however came on grass while de Minaur defeated Berrettini in their only hardcourt match that was held in 2022 at the ATP Cup.
What makes the bookmakers peg de Minaur as a 3/5 favourite in this fourth round encounter is not just the fact that the Aussie has been in some good form all season but also the manner in which he came through in his previous encounter.
Playing the crowd favourite and a player a lot of experts believe is one for the future, Joao Fonseca, de Minaur pulled off a three-set win as he came back from being a set down to clinch his place in the fourth round.
This isn’t to take anything from Berrettini’s performance who has found his competitive juices going this year. He overcame Hugo Gaston in a tight opener but then strolled to a straight-set win against Zizou Bergs in round three.
De Minaur would still be our pick here.
de Minaur v Berrettini Tip: De Minaur to win: 3/5
Tomas Machac v Jakub Mensik
Earlier this year, Tomas Machac had defeated Jakub Mensik in their first ever meeting which had come at the Mexican Open. That first round match had gone into the third set.
Mensik now has a chance to avenge that defeat and a chance to regain a top-50 spot on the ATP Rankings when they get updated for next week.
The 21st-ranked Machac will have his own plans set though as he looks to pick off from his solid showing at the Acapulco Open where he won his maiden ATP title. Having lost his opener in Indian Wells after that, Machac was stretched to a three-setter in the second round here by Matteo Arnaldi but the manner in which he then tamed Reilly Opelka in the third round would only add to his confidence.
On the other hand, Mensik knows he has pushed Machac once before and has already sent one of the pre-tournament favourites Jack Draper packing from the competition. He enters this match on the back of a straight-set dismissal of Roman Safiullin, making him a tough opponent to face.
We could see a top-notch encounter that goes the distance.
Machac v Mensik Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5
