Marie Bouzkova v Raluka Serban
In a match between the 51st-ranked Marie Bouzkova and world number 204, Raluka Serban, it isn’t a surprise who starts off a favourite – Bouzkova starting out 3/10 odds to grab this victory.
The reason behind this is simple. Serban enters this encounter with just one win under her belt at this level, and that came in the first round of this competition against Nuria Parrizas Diaz.
What makes this victory an even more surprising one is that Serban, who had entered the tournament as a qualifier, came back from a set down to stun Parrizas Nuria.
Bouzkova, who had entered the tournament on the back of a four-match losing streak, finally won a match to break that record. And even then, she was taken to three sets by Aleksandra Krunic.
Not that it should matter too much here because she now faces a player who is ranked 150 places below her. Expect Bouzkova to run to an easy victory here.
Bouzkova v Serban Tip: Bouzkova to win in straight sets: 4/5
Patricia Tig v Julieta Pareja
Not often do you have a second round match in a WTA 250 tournament which has a player ranked 243rd in the world taking on the 550th-ranked player. That’s what will happen when Patricia Tig faces Julieta Pareja for a place in the quarterfinals.
Tig was once ranked 56th in the world, but she fell drastically to 790th by the end of the 2022 season. Since then it has been a matter of featuring on the ITF circuit to try and regain some of her lost glory and even made it to the semifinals of an ITF event earlier this year.
She lost in the qualifiers here but made it through as a lucky loser before stunning Emiliana Arango 6-3, 6-3 in her opener here. It was her first win at this level in years.
Pareja is coming off an easy win over Jose Sanchez Uribe Maria, defeating a player who herself was ranked outside the top 1200. Her 6-1, 6-1 victory gave her a maiden win at this level.
It all boils down to Tig’s experience now against the exuberance of Pareja and we could in turn see a close one that goes right down to the wire.
Tig v Pareja Tip: Tig to win in three sets: 3/1
Katarzyna Kawa v Laura Pigossi
The 180th-ranked Laura Pigossi will be up against the 223rd-ranked Katarzyna Kawa in this second round match. It will be their fourth meeting, having earlier faced off in the qualifiers of the 2024 French Open and twice in WTA 125 tournaments.
Pigossi had won once, in that qualifier, while Kawa had grabbed victories in the next two matches.
Kawa, who had kick-started her season in Cancun in February, turned her attention to clay after that and it has taken her some time to get going. She needed qualifying wins to make the main draw before routing local Valentin Mediorreal Arias 6-1, 6-1 to make the second round.
She now takes on Pigossi who stunned Laura Siegemund, coming back from a set down despite having started a 3/1 underdog. All of a sudden, Pigossi starts a 4/5 favourite here and we could see her come through here given her record in this tournament consists of a finals and a quarterfinal appearance.
Kawa v Pigossi Tip: Pigossi to win: 4/5
