Sebastian Baez v Gabriel Diallo
The top seeded Sebastian Baez shouldn’t have a lot of trouble when he takes on the 81st-ranked Gabriel Diallo in what will be their first ever meeting.
Now Baez might be coming off a three-match losing streak but two of those losses came in the opening rounds at Indian Wells and Miami. Baez’s core competency lies in making it deep in clay-court competitions as had been the case before he kick-started with the Sunshine Masters – he was the title winner at the Rio Open and then made the final in Santiago where he lost to Laslo Djere.
On the other hand, Diallo overcame Chun-hsin Tseng in the first round here to win his first ever main draw encounter on clay in his career. He has also had a good enough season so far to hit a career-high ranking of 81st, but will that be enough to test out a clay-court specialist like Baez?
We don’t think so and a straight-set win beckons for the Argentine.
Baez v Diallo Tip: Baez to win in straight sets: 5/6
Flavio Cobolli v Richard Gasquet
World number 45 Flavio Cobolli has a good chance to make it to the quarterfinals as he takes on a struggling Richard Gasquet, an opponent who defeated him in their only previous meeting which came in 2023 on the Challenger circuit. Incidentally that match was also played on clay.
Things are a touch different right now with Cobolli having risen in the rankings while Gasquet’s rank having plumetted down to 148th in the world.
In fact, Gasquet was a 13/5 underdog going into his first round match here against Botic van de Zandschulp and fought from being a set down to grab a three-set win over his Dutch opponent. It was just Gasquet’s second win of the season.
Cobolli’s form has been a bit of a struggle with his only two wins having come in the first week of the season at the United Cup. Since then he hasn’t done anything of note and might have been rather glad to switch over to clay, a surface on which he has won all three of his lower circuit titles.
Gasquet can be expected to use all his experience here and could grab a set too.
Cobolli v Gasquet Tip: Gasquet to win a set – Yes: 4/5
Roberto Bautista Agut v Francisco Comesana
This is a match between the 52nd-ranked Roberto Bautista Agut and the world number 64 Francisco Comesana and it’s in very similar fashion that these two players have earned their right to face off in this second round encounter.
Both Bautista Agut and Comesana came back from a set down against their respective opponents to find a way through, defeating Yunchaokete Bu and Martin Klizan respectively to earn their spot in this encounter.
Bautista Agut was a bit of a favourite entering his opener against Bu which was a surprise given that he had won just one previous match all season from seven tournaments played in 2025. Comesana, on the other hand, was a 1/3 favourite and to have been stretched to a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 scoreline by a player ranked 316th in the world, was a surprise.
The good news is that the clay-court specialist, Comesana, who had earlier made the semifinals in Rio is through and now faces an aging Bautista Agut in this encounter. He will hold the aces.
Bautista Agut v Comesana Tip: Comesana to win: 4/6
