Roberto Carballes Baena v Nuno Borges
The 43rd-ranked Nuno Borges takes on world number 51 Roberto Carballes Baena in what will be their first ever meeting at the highest level. They have played once before in the qualifier of of an event in Estoril, also on clay and Borges had won that in straight sets.
Borges had a first round bye here but in what was his first match on clay for the season, struggled to come through against the 7/5 underdog Raphael Collignon. In the end, Borges needed a third set tie-breaker in which he won 7-0 to grab this spot.
This isn’t to say that Borges struggles on clay – his only title at the highest level came on Bastad last year, also on clay. It looked more a case of rustiness of not having played on it since last June.
And up against him is Carballes Baena who looks to have turned things around a little after the kind of start he had on clay earlier this year. The Spaniard is a clay-court specialist but off late he has been focussing on improving his game outside of it too and that could have had an effect on his play on the red dirt. He had featured in Buenos Aires and Rio earlier this year and lost in the first round at both.
Here, Carballes Baena defeated Taha Baadi and Otto Virtanen in straight sets in successive matches to seal his quarterfinal place but now faces a really tough battle. While Borges might have taken his time in his clay court season-opener, we expect him to stroll through this one now.
Carballes Baena v Borges Tip: Borges to win: 8/11
Tallon Griekspoor v Mattia Bellucci
Tallon Griekspoor will face off against Mattia Bellucci for the first time in their career and it will be a tussle for a place in the semifinals.
Griekspoor had a first round bye here and was then stretched to three sets by Pablo Carreno Busta in what was his first match on clay for the season. The Dutchman needed a tie-breaker first up and was taken down in the second but squeezing past his opponent.
A quarterfinalist here the last time he had featured in 2023, Griekspoor had also made the third round at the Madrid Masters and French Open last year and will now take on a player who was 177th at the start of the 2024 season but is now on the verge of making it back to his career-best ranking of 68th again.
Bellucci, who hadn’t played on clay this season before this tournament, has already eased past Pavel Kotov and Pierre-Hugues Herbert and it won’t be much of a surprise if he puts up a sterling display against Griekspoor too.
Looking at the games handicap here.
Griekspoor v Bellucci Tip: Games Handicap +4.5: 1/2
Alexandre Muller v Kamil Majchrzak
In what will be the first meeting between these two players, the world number 41 Alexandre Muller takes on 122nd-ranked Kamil Mazchrzak in this quarterfinal.
Muller, who had entered this tournament at his career-best ranking of 41st in the world following a title win at Hong Kong and a finals appearance in Rio, overcame a first set deficit to go past Hugo Dellien in the second round of the competition. This was after he had a first round bye.
Interestingly, despite his form, rise in the rankings and performance on clay this season, Muller is as long as 7/10 to win this one against Mazchrzak. The reason is down to Mazchrzak’s brilliance in the tournament so far, having come through the qualifiers in two straight-sets before shocking Jaume Munar and overpowering Jesper de Jong.
That might be so but Muller himself is in some of his best time on court and at 7/10 we think this is quite tempting to go with his victory.
Muller v Majchrzak Tip: Muller to win: 7/10
