First round action at the 2025 ATP Barcelona Open continues on Tuesday, April 15 with Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud to take to court today. You can get the best predictions and tips for the day from this tournament today.
Stefanos Tsitsipas v Reilly Opelka
These two players, the 16th-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas and the world number 105 Reilly Opelka have played twice before this but never since 2021. Both matches came in hardcourt competitions and saw Tsitsipas win at Cincinnati and Opelka triumph in Toronto.
It’s fascinating to see that Tsitsipas has made it to the final at this tournament on four previous occasions but never won a title here. He will be entering this competition this year with some recent form but also on the back of a quarterfinal loss at the Monte-Carlo Masters where he had entered as a defending champion.
The good news for Tsitsipas going into this encounter is Opelka doesn’t enjoy his time on clay. In fact, Opelka last played a competitive match on this surface in 2022 and his overall record on red dirt isn’t something to behold – across all the circuits, he is 70-51 on it, which while it might look decent, also consists of performances on the Futures and Challenger circuit.
No surprises then that Tsitsipas starts off a 1/7 favourite. While we believe those are very short odds, a straight-set win looks likely – it’s just a matter of how long can Opelka go defending in the match with his strong serve.
Tsitsipas v Opelka Tip: Under 23.5 games in the match: 11/20
Casper Ruud v Daniel Elahi Galan
There have been four previous meetings between the world number 10 Casper Ruud and the 117th-ranked Daniel Elahi Galan and the Norwegian number one has won every single time. This includes a couple of qualifier wins at the 2018 French Open and US Open, with their most recent match having come in 2021.
Ruud, the winner of this tournament last year, is coming off a surprise result from the Monte-Carlo Masters where he had a first round bye, won the second round but was sent packing by Alexei Popyrin in the third. This was despite his opponent having begun a 10/3 underdog in their encounter.
In this match, Ruud starts off an even bigger favourite as you would expect when two players ranked in the top 10 and outside the top 100 face off – Ruud is 1/7 to win this. What’s interesting to note here is that since the Australian Open, Galan has played only clay court matches.
He has won a couple of titles too, on the Challenger circuit, and made the main draw here with victories over Nikoloz Basilashvili and Jacob Fearnley. That’s where Ruud will need to be careful, any slip-ups and Galan could be all over him.
Ruud v Galan Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 8/11
Carlos Alcaraz v Ethan Quinn
Monte-Carlo Masters Carlos Alcaraz should not have a lot of problem in his first round encounter against the 126h-ranked Ethan Quinn in what will be their first career meeting.
A two-time winner at this tournament before he gave it a miss in 2024, Alcaraz is a whopping 1/33 favourite here and for obvious reasons. His performance on clay has been superlative throughout his career, he has already won a title on this surface and is playing a qualifier first up.
Where Quinn might stake a teeny-weeny claim at giving Alcaraz a fight for his money is the way he won his qualifiers to make the main draw. Quinn was 3/1 entering both those qualifying rounds – against Corentin Moutet and Borna Coric – and yet, came through from a set behind to win those matches.
Alcaraz v Quinn Tip: Over 16.5 in the match: 2/5
