The second round action at the 2025 ATP Munich Open begins from Wednesday, April 16 with Ben Shelton and Alexander Zverev in play and you can get the best predictions and tips for the day from this tournament today.
Ben Shelton v Botic van de Zandschulp
While Ben Shelton and Botic van de Zandschulp have never faced off at the highest level before this, they did play in the qualifiers of the 2021 US Open. Van de Zandschulp had won that one.
Things are quite different here with Shelton having gone on to touch a career-high ranking of 12th in the world while his opponent, who was once 22nd, has now fallen to 89th on the ATP charts.
Shelton is in early stages of his clay court career though having won just two main draw matches on it in 2023 and showing he can perform on it last year when he grabbed the Houston Open title.
This year, he was knocked out of the Monte-Carlo in his opener before needing three sets including two tie-breakers to get past Borna Gojo in his opener here. In essence, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag from Shelton.
On the other hand, van de Zandschulp has won three of his lower circuit tournaments on clay and has a third round appearance at the French Open. Add that to the fact that he has beaten Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz on clay and you are looking at a player who can do his bit.
We could see a keen tussle though, a battle against each other and for form with a third set likely.
Shelton v van de Zandschulp Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5
Alexander Zverev v Daniel Altmaier
World number three Alexander Zverev faces fellow German and the 68th-ranked Daniel Altmaier in the second round of this competition. This will be their fourth meeting with Zverev leading 2-1 on head to head. All three of those meetings came in hard court competitions.
Zverev’s form has taken a hit since having made the final of the Australian with the German having won and lost seven matches apiece in this period.
This includes a first round victory here over Alexandre Muller, a win that would give the world number three a lot more confidence given the way it came. He dropped just five games in the match.
Zvrerev will now face a player who loves his time on clay more than any other surface and is coming off a third round appearance at the Monte-Carlo Masters where he had begun as a qualifier. Two tie-breakers helped Altmaier win his opener against Chun hsin Tseng and given Zverev’s recent issues, he will enter the encounter knowing he has a chance to compete.
Zverev v Altmaier Tip: Altmaier to win a set – Yes: 2/1
Tallon Griekspoor v Yannick Hanfmann
In what could turn out to be an interesting second round encounter the 37th-ranked Tallon Griekspoor faces the world number 131 Yannick Hanfmann.
Why interesting? Because while Griekspoor won their only top-level meeting last year in Indian Wells, there have been two other Challenger encounters which were played on clay and Hanfmann had grabbed victories in both of them in straight sets.
So while Griekspoor is coming off a 6-4, 6-2 rout of Learner Tien and had earlier made the final at the Marrakech Open as well, we doubt this will be a straightforward result for him. Especially against a player who shocked Jakub Mensik in his opener here.
Expect a fight here and one in which the games or even a set handicap market looks like a tempting one to look at.
Griekspoor v Hanfmann Tip: Set Handicap Hanfmann +1.5: 5/6
