The Guadalajara Open is also called Guadalajara Open Akron presented by Santander as a result of the advertisers was a WTA 1000 tournament held in Zapopan in Mexico as a replacement for the events in China.
However, once China came back to taking its appointed place in the WTA calendar, the Guadalajara Open has been demoted to a WTA 500 series from the 2024 edition. The Wuhan Open in China will now be the WTA 1000 competition as a replacement.
It will be a 56-woman strong event though with the top eight players getting a bye into the second round.

What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the WTA Guadalajara Open?
Greek number one Maria Sakkari, who had finished runner-up in the 2022 edition of this competition, went one better in 2023 when she lifted the trophy after beating Caroline Dolehide in the final.
Sakkari won the final 7-5, 6-3 after having not conceded a single set in the entire tournament even before that. Incidentally, it was a monkey off her back as Sakkari had finished runner-up on six previous occasions after getting to the final.
She had earlier overcome Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinal while Dolehide crushed fellow American Sofia Kenin in the other semis.
