What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the ATP Japan Open?
Arthur Fils clinched the title at the 2024 edition of the Japan Open by defeating fellow Frenchman Ugo Humbert in the final. He came back from a set down to grab a thriller 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-3 to win his third tournament at this level.
This was after only two of the seeded players, Holger Rune and defending champion Ben Shelton made it to the quarterfinals, while just Rune entered the semis.
On his way to the final, Fils stunned the top seeded Taylor Fritz in the first round, benefitted from the retirement of Matteo Berrettini in the second, edged out Shelton in a hard-fought three-setter before getting in two more tie-breakers against Rune in the semifinal.
Humbert had no such issues making it to the final with just one set dropped before that all-French title-decider.
Fils had earlier won the 2023 Lyon Open and 2024 Hamburg Open.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the ATP Japan Open?
Ben Shelton, who had entered the tournament as an unseeded player, overcame a fellow unseeded player Aslan Karatsev in the final to clinch the title. Shelton won the final 7-5, 6-1.
This was after Shelton had earlier dumped out Tommy Paul in the quarterfinal, the only seeded player he faced in the entire tournament. Karatsev, on the other hand, surprised Frances Tiafoe in the first round and then eased past Alex de Minaur in the quarters.
Top seeded Taylor Fritz reached the second round with a win over Cameron Norrie but was stunned by local wildcard entrant Shintaro Mochuzuki. Mochuzuki would go on to make the semifinals.
Second seeded Casper Ruud also lost in the second round.
