It was given a miss in 1983 and then again in 2008 and 2009.
Under the auspices of WTA, it was first a Tier III event back in 1990 before getting promoted to Tier II in 1993 and a Tier I competition in 2004.
It became a Premier tournament in 2010 after making its return, wasn’t held in 2014, a WTA 125 competition in 2015 before returning to the fold yet again in 2022 as a WTA 500 competition.
Steffi Graf has won the singles event in San Diego four times while Venus Williams is a three-time winner here.

What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the WTA San Diego Open?
Unseeded British player Katie Boulter surprised everyone in the competition by lifting her second title at the highest level. She defeated the sixth seeded Marta Kostyuk in the final, winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 to grab the trophy.
Boulter had earlier upset the second seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round before getting past Donna Vekic, the seventh seed. She then put the third seeded Emma Navarro out of her misery before edging past her sixth seeded opponent, making it wins over four seeded players in a row.
Earlier, Kostyuk defeated the top seeded Jessica Pegula in the semifinals.
Other than this title, Boulter would also go on to defend her Nottingham Open tournament win later in the year.
