This was after Baptiste had won the first set in a one-sided tie-breaker and looked like she had the measure of the Osaka serve.
What she probably didn’t bargain for the mental fortitude that Osaka showed in breaking her opponent three times in the second set and two more in the decider to clinch a place in the semifinals.
Osaka had earlier had no difficulties getting past Lina Glushko and Julia Grabher in the first two rounds of this competition.
Parks Forced to Win on Saturday
With the weather causing disruptions in Auckland, Parks finished her quarterfinal just hours prior to the start of this semifinal and that could be a factor.
What will be good news for Parks is she spent just 79 minutes in getting through to the last four stage, beating Katie Volynets 6-1, 6-4 in the previous round.
Parks bombarded her opponent with 11 aces and broke her serve five times in the match and while she would like to do a lot better than the 35% second serve win percentage, she wouldn’t be taking a back-step here.
Not after having beaten Amanda Anisimova and Greet Minnen in her previous matches.

It’s typically difficult to play back to back matches on the same day and Parks could have that issue but we think she has the momentum coming into this one and might trouble Osaka as a result of that. Could win one set at the very least.
