Marcos Giron v Aleksandar Vukic Preview

Head-to-Head: While they have never faced off at the highest level, there have been two previous meetings between these two players on the Futures circuit way back in 2015-16. Vukic had won both in three sets

While Aleksandar Vukic enters this tournament on the back of having featured at the Brisbane International last week, Giron will be opening his 2025 tennis season with this competition in Adelaide.

Vukic had a mixed start as he overcame 1/1 odds to defeat David Goffin in his opener – and for the loss of a mere five games at that – but then went down to the defending champion Grigor Dimitrov.

He enters this competition having played here just once, in 2022, and had bowed out in the very first round.

On the other hand, Giron had a decent 2024 season which saw him not only win his maiden ATP title – in Newport – but also a jump in his year-ending ranking from 60th to 46th.

Giron has had a decent time in hardcourt competitions but Vukic also prefers playing on them and both enter this tournament with their own challenges to contend with. We could see this go down to the wire.

Giron v Vukic prediction: Three sets in the match: 6/5

Brandon Nakashima v Yannick Hanfmann Preview

Head-to-Head: Nakashima and Hanfmann have never faced off in any competitive match at the highest level but they did play once on the Challenger circuit in 2021. Nakashima had come away a winner in that clay-court competition.

Nakashima was felled in the very first round of the first tournament he played in 20025, losing to Lorenzo Sonego in the first round in Hong Kong last week. It was a surprise defeat for sure with the American having started off a 11/20 favourite in that encounter.

He would dearly like to change that when he takes to court in this tournament in the lead-up to the Australian Open as he looks to get back to his career-best ranking of 35.

In a lot of ways Nakashima would hope to get himself close to the kind of form he showed last season which he topped off with a fourth round appearance at the US Open.

Standing in his way to the second round isn’t much of a challenge, at least based on current form with Yannick Hanfmann having fallen to 98th in the world.

The good news for Hanfmann is he has won a couple of qualifying rounds here after having done the same last week in Brisbane to make the main draw. There he had lost to Grigor Dimitrov in his opener though.

Can he mount a challenge here? We highly doubt that.

Nakashima v Hanfmann prediction: Nakashima to win in straight sets: 3/4

Alexander Bublik v Miomir Kecmanovic Preview

Head-to-Head: While Miomir Kecmanovic leads Alexander Bublik, both of his wins have come on clay – at the 2022 Madrid Masters and French Open. Bublik beat Kecmanovic in three sets indoors in Astana in 2021.

Three of Bublik’s four career titles have come on indoor hardcourt surfaces – with the fourth on grass – and that is a sharp pointer to how he loves playing on the quicker courts.

On the other hand, Kecmanovic’s preference is for clay and that can be seen from both, his only ATP title which was at Kitzbuhel and the aforementioned head to head.

So while Bublik’s form has been a bit erratic and he will be coming into this season with this being his first match – Kecmanovic has already played a couple of rounds in Hong Kong – he will start off as our favourite to down his Serbian opponent here.

Bublik v Kecmanovic prediction: Bublik to win: 11/10

David Goffin v Rinky Hijikata Preview

Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came at the Winston-Salem Open last year and Goffin had won that in straight sets to move to the semifinals.

For starters, there’s some difference in the quality of tennis as far as their rankings are concerned – Goffin’s 53rd to Hijikata’s 79th – but that’s not all.

Goffin should have won his opener in Brisbane last week when he faced Aleksandar Vukic but fell easily in straight sets. On the other hand, Hijikata was knocked out in the first round in Brisbane but then again he could be excused for that given he was up against the might of Novak Djokovic.

Hijikata, however, did not have a great qualifying outing here either, losing to fellow Aussie and a 13/10 underdog Adam Walton in the second round. It was only after Jaume Munar withdrew from the competition that he came in to replace him as a lucky loser.

This makes Goffin a bit of a favourite here and we back him to clinch his maiden win of the season.

Goffin v Hijikata prediction: Goffin to win: 1/2
