Sebastian Korda v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Preview
Head-to-Head: These two have met in the first round at the 2022 Miami Masters and the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters and Korda has won both times.
Korda will kick-start his campaign this season with this second round match, following an opening round bye.
Having reached the semifinal here last year, Korda will have fond memories of this tournament but he will hope he can do a lot better than his 6-2, 6-1 loss to Jiri Lehecka at this very venue.
Last year, Korda bagged a title in Washington and also made it to the semifinal at the Canadian Open and the world number 22 will now hope he can continue his fine run this year too.
His first opponent for the season is Alejandro Davidovich Fokina who was put to sword by Jaume Munar in the first round of the Hong Kong Open last week.
Fokina did well to pull off a straight-set win over Roberto Bautista Agut but against Korda, he will have to do as well with his serving as he did in the first round – he faced just two break-points and was broken only once while winning 73% of his first serves.
Korda v Davidovich Fokina prediction: Korda to win: 11/10
Miomir Kecmanovic v Christopher O’Connell Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between these two players before this and both have won one. O’Connell clinched their match in the 2023 edition of this tournament while Kecmanovic made 1-1 with a victory at Belgrade last year.
Having made the round of 16 in each of his previous two appearances at this competition, Kecmanovic will now hope he can go a step further. And in order to do that the world number 55 will need to get past his 64th-ranked opponent.
This was after Kecmanovic overcame Alexander Bublik in the first round here, winning 6-4, 6-2 to set up his meeting with the Aussie.
Kecmanovic was a 4/6 favourite going into his opener but not too many would expected him to win in just over an hour. O’Connell, on the other hand, had a fight on his hand but registered his first win of the season when he edged out Arthur Rinderknech in his opener.
The local lad, who was himself at the receiving end of a close loss in Brisbane last week, clinched his second round spot with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) victory in a match that went on for an hour and 40 minutes.
He faced just one break-point in the entire match and saved it while managing to get past his opponent’s serve once from the six opportunities he got.
Kecmanovic v O’Connell prediction: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
Li Tu v Benjamin Bonzi Preview
Head-to-Head: Bonzi and Tu have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Benjamin Bonzi got a bye directly into the second round despite being a qualifier after the pair of Jiri Lehecka and Tomas Machac withdrew from the tournament.
The Frenchman had earlier gotten past Fabio Fognini – who retired due to fitness concerns – and James McCabe in the qualifier to make the main draw.
That’s exactly what Bonzi had done last week in Brisbane too, where coincidentally he was involved with James McCabe in the qualifiers before his other opponent Adrian Andreev retired from their match in the first set.
Bonzi then defeated Alejandro Tabilo in the first round there before going down to Nicolas Jarry in the second.
Tu has been ranked better than 174th in the world which means that just by winning his opening round here against fellow Aussie James Duckworth, he has already achieved his career-best ranking.
This follows his ouster from the qualifiers last week in Brisbane and Tu will now have the rare opportunity to make it to the quarterfinals here. To do that, however, the Aussie will need to overcome 3/1 odds for his win in the second round.
Tu v Bonzi prediction: Bonzi to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 6/5
Tomas Martin Etcheverry v Thanasi Kokkinakis Preview
Head-to-Head: This will be the first meeting between Etcheverry and Kokkinakis.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry was stretched in the first set of his first round match by Tristan Schoolkate, a little known Aussie but it shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise given how things have been for the Argentine.
The world number 39 had earlier featured in the United Cup where he was 1-1 on win-loss. He had gone down in a hurry to Alex de Minaur and made a heavy weather of downing Billy Harris.
Here, he was on court for seven minutes short of two hours and faced five set-points in the opening set. Credit where it’s due, Etcheverry showed great gumption in saving all of them before winning the set off the first one he got.
He will now take on another Aussie – his third in four matches this year – and it might not be that simple against him. That’s because Thanasi Kokkinakis loves his time playing in hardcourt competitions in Australia and against a player who is more of a clay-courter, he could prove to be a handful.
Kokkinakis was stretched to three sets by Nishioka Yoshihito in what was the first match of the season for him but we expect him to get past the Argentine in an easier fashion.
Etcheverry v Kokkinakis prediction: Kokkinakis to win in straight sets: 6/5
