Tommy Paul v Felix Auger-Aliassime Head to Head
There has been one previous meeting between these two players and Auger-Aliassime had clinched that Indian Wells Open 2023 encounter in three, hard-fought sets.
Paul Eases Past Hijikata
While Tommy Paul had some trouble getting past Manuel Guinard in his second round match following an opening round bye, he did not have to face any of that in his quarterfinal against Australia’s Rinky Hijikata.
Hijikata had made a dash to the quarterfinals at the expense of David Goffin and Brandon Nakashima but his stay in Adelaide was ended in straight sets by Paul.
Paul was on court for an hour and 19 minutes as he slammed eight aces and saved all four of the break-points he faced. On the other hand, he broke Hijikata once in each of the two sets to clinch his semifinal spot.
Having not featured in the first week of the tournament, Paul has been reasonably sharp here but his real test will begin now against a player more his peer from a quality point of view.
With one eye on the Australian Open, it remains to be seen if Paul will have his entire focus on this encounter too.
Auger-Aliassime Has No Trouble v Giron
Having begun the season at the United Cup with a loss to Borna Coric, Felix Auger-Aliassime has recovered well from there on. Well enough to feel confident going into this encounter and to the Australian Open in three days’ time.
He was a shock winner over Taylor Fritz in that competition 10 days ago and while Canada did not qualify for the quarterfinals, that result seemed to have given Auger-Aliassime some confidence.
The world number 29 came back from being a set down against Arthur Cazaux in the second round here, following an opening bye, and was then faced with a challenging prospect of taking down USA’s Marcos Giron.
At 5-5 in the first set, Auger-Aliassime was forced to save three break-points and then squandered three set-points in the next game before scraping through the first set in a tie-breaker.
He was then forced to save five more break-points in his very first service game of the second set before settling in and earning himself a couple of breaks in a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win.
Things could get a lot tougher now.
Paul v Auger-Aliassime Prediction
It needs to be seen if Paul has his focus completely on this encounter or if there’s that lure of Australian Open and consequent need to not stretch himself too much to take. At his best, we will be backing Paul to win this.
Paul v Auger-Aliassime Tips
