Jannik Sinner v Tristan Schoolkate Preview
Head-to-Head: This will be the first meeting between Sinner and Schoolkate.
Jannik Sinner entered the Australian Open as the world number one and defending champion and while there were signs of early rustiness, he came through in straight sets in the end.
Playing Nicolas Jarry in his opener, Sinner needed two hours and 42 minutes to overcome Jarry, winning 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-1. The Italian faced two break-points in the match but saved them both while getting the better of his opponent’s serve on two occasions in the third set.
Incidentally, it was also Sinner’s first match of the season and to be able to come through without any trouble against the world number 36 would give him some confidence.
He will now take on an Aussie, ranked 173rd in the world in the form of Tristan Schoolkate. Schoolkate overcame Taro Daniel in a hard-fought four-setter after coming back from being a set down.
In a match that lasted three hours and 17 minutes, Schoolkate edged out Daniel 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 6-1, 6-4, serving 23 aces in the process. He was broken twice but got past Daniel’s serve on five occasions to record his maiden win at the Australian Open having earlier won one round at the 2024 US Open as well.
Sinner should not have a lot of worries other than the vociferous support that the local youngster might have.
Sinner v Schoolkate prediction: Over 25.5 games in the match: 1/2
Holger Rune v Matteo Berrettini Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been four previous meetings between these two players and Rune has won three and lost one. They played twice in 2024, at Cincinnati and Stockholm and Rune beat Berrettini in both.
Following a poor start to the season at the Brisbane International where Holger Rune lost to Jiri Lehecka in the opener, it looked like he was on the verge of going down yet again when he took to court for his first round match here against Zhizhen Zhang.
Zhang bagged the first set and came back to level the match out at two sets all to take it into the fifth. Rune broke his opponent in the sixth game but was broken right back before he clinched the encounter by getting the better of Zhang’s serve in the 10th game of the final set.
Rune will need to up the ante when he faces the in-form Matteo Berrettini who is coming off a win over Cameron Norrie.
A Berrettini-Norrie first round match is hardly a fair one but for either player but a delicious prospect for the neutral. It turned out to be a battling encounter but one in which Berrettini slowly got more and more control as the match progressed.
Nearly three hours into it, Berrettini cast a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 win to make it to the second round for the first time at the Australian Open since his 2022 semifinal appearance.
