Jiri Lehecka v Benjamin Bonzi Head to Head
The first time they faced off was on the Challenger circuit in 2021 and Bonzi had won it in straight sets. In 2022 they met again in Monte-Carlo where Lehecka overcame Bonzi in the qualifiers to make the main draw.
Lehecka Gets Injury Help Again
Jiri Lehecka is 7-0 for the season following his second set win over Hugo Gaston and a title victory at the Brisbane International. And for the third time of those seven matches that he has won, he was assisted by an opponent’s injury.
Gaston was trailing by a set and was a break down in the second when he threw in the two to leave Lehecka a winner.
Earlier, Lehecka had eased past Li Tu, defeating him in four sets to advance to the second round.
Having made the quarterfinal at this very tournament in 2023, Lehecka knows what it’s like to feature in the second week of a Grand Slam.
And that experience will be very valuable when it comes to critical moments in matches, especially against a player like Benjamin Bonzi who hasn’t quite experienced the same.
Bonzi Goes Past Passaro
In a match that lasted two hours and 12 minutes, Benjamin Bonzi was forced into a four sets but that was about the fight that he had to endure before coming through and making it to the third round.
In winning 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, Bonzi equalled his best ever performance in a Grand Slam – this was the third time he had made the third round at a major, including once at the Australian Open itself in 2023.
Bonzi, who was broken twice in the encounter, has never reached round four at any Grand Slam competition though and that’s where he could face some resistance.
He does like playing on hardcourt surfaces and had earlier demolished David Goffin in straight sets while winning a round apiece at both, Brisbane and Adelaide despite starting out as a qualifier.
Lehecka v Bonzi Prediction
We can expect Bonzi to put up a fight – he does look battle-hardened here – but will that be enough to come through? We certainly have our doubts against a strong-looking Lehecka.
