Khachanov Goes Past Diallo
A 2024 edition-emulating fourth round appearance awaits Karen Khachanov as he takes to court for his third round match on Saturday.
This was after he shrugged off a challenging performance from Gabriel Diallo in his second round win with the match going on for three hours and 17 minutes.
Khachanov might have needed four sets and that much time to get past a player ranked nearly 70 places behind him but he would be incredibly proud of the fact that he dropped his serve just once in the entire match.
In turn he broke Diallo thrice, following on from a straight-set win over Adrian Mannarino in the first round.
This follows a first round loss at the hands of Kei Nishikori at the Hong Kong Open.
Michelsen Magic Continues against McCabe
Following his shock win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round, Alex Michelsen had a challenge of a different kind to follow up in the second round.
That was to do with facing an Aussie in front of highly partisan local crowds.
Michelsen is all of 20 years old too, so it’s not like he has experienced a lot of that in his career, but rather interestingly he had played James McCabe at this very tournament last year too.
He had taken four sets to get past McCabe in that match and he went one better this time, staying in the match even when things – and the crowds – went against him while turning the screws when he got the opportunity.
In the end, Michelsen won 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (4) to reach the third round and he will now be gunning for his first ever place in a Grand Slam fourth round.

While Khachanov’s experience gives him the favourites tag at 3/5, we wouldn’t be surprised if Michelsen springs a bit of a surprise here. Expecting this to be a lot closer than those odds suggest with Michelsen in with a chance to win at least two sets here.
