Jasmine Paolini entered the Australian Open on the back of a 2-1 win-loss record at the United Cup where her only defeat came at the hands of Karolina Muchova. She had earlier routed Belinda Bencic 6-1, 6-1 in that very tournament.
Here, Paolini has begun with great aplomb.
Sure, her opponents haven’t been of the quality of Bencic or even Elina Svitolina but she has been in a demolition mode, beating Sijia Wei and Renata Zarazua in straight sets in her first two matches.
After dropping just four games against Wei, Paolini won 6-2, 6-3 against Zarazua, despite losing her serve on three occasions. Where she will need to really buck up now that she will take on some of the better quality players is with her unforced errors, which read a whopping 29 in round two.
Even Zarazua ended with only 23 for the match.
Svitolina Tames Dolehide
Having not played a single match in the lead-up to the Australian Open, there were a few question-marks around Elina Svitolina’s match fitness coming into the season’s first major.
She has answered those quite convincingly, as she ran away to her second successive straight-set win to book a place in the third round.
In beating Caroline Dolehide 6-1, 6-4, Svitolina has shown remarkable consistency over the years, grabbing a third round place for the eighth time in a row at this tournament. On four of those previous seven occasions, she has made the fourth round and is a quarterfinalist two times.
Svitolina had earlier eased past Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-4.
