Jannik Sinner v Alex de Minaur Head to Head
These two first met at the final of the ATP Next Gen Finals in 2019. Sinner won that match in straight sets.
Since then, there have been eight more matches, including two at the Davis Cup and what’s stunning to see is that Sinner has lost just one set to de Minaur across all these encounters.
They had faced off thrice last year including once at the Davis Cup and at the Rotterdam Open and ATP Finals.
Sinner Battles Health, Holger
After seeing off challenges from Nicolas Jarry, Tristan Schoolkate and Marcos Giron with much ease in the first three rounds of the competition, Jannik Sinner was in some strife in the fourth round with both, his health and his opponent Holger Rune.
After winning the opening set, Sinner looked to be ill at ease and gave away a break in the second set. Rune went on to clinch the set, the second that the world number one has lost in the competition, but more vitally he was forced to take a medical timeout in the third set.
Sinner would later go on to reveal that he was struggling with his health going into the match with coach Darren Cahill admitting the Italian hadn’t even been able to warm up before this all-important encounter.
And while Sinner returned from the timeout in a much improved state and would go on to win it 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, there would be question-marks about how he feels between Monday and the start of his quarterfinal.
de Minaur Eases Through against Michelsen
While Sinner struggled through to his win, Alex de Minaur did not have a lot of problems against his namesake Alex Michelsen.
Their fourth round lasted a touch over two hours and while Michelsen shrugged aside an opening set bagel, he was unable to keep de Minaur at bay. De Minaur grabbed the victory in straight sets.
After running away with the first set, de Minaur broke Michelsen for the fourth time in a row when he went up 2-0 in the second set. Serving for the set at 5-4 though, de Minaur couldn’t hold on and it looked like his American opponent had given himself a chance.
De Minaur, however, did not allow anything of that sort, winning the second set in a tie-breaker before clinching the match with an easy win in the final set.
This follows victories for de Minaur over Botic van de Zandschulp, Tristan Boyer and Francisco Cerundolo in his previous three rounds.
Sinner v de Minaur Prediction
Sinner’s health is the only factor at play here, else it should be a fairly straightforward win for him given the kind of record he possesses against de Minaur. Still backing Sinner to win this in either three or four sets.
