Jannik Sinner v Alexander Zverev Head to Head
There have been six previous meetings between these two players and Zverev is 4-2 on head to head. In outdoor hardcourt competitions, it’s 2-1 to Zverev, having won at the 2021 and 2023 editions of the US Open while Sinner beat the German in their last meeting which came in Cincinnati last year.
Sinner Shellacking for Shelton
It would be fair to say that Ben Shelton had his chances for a while in his semifinal against Jannik Sinner. Once Sinner found his mojo, however, there was no looking back for the world number one who raced off to a straight-set win over the American.
Having cruised through to a win over Alex de Minaur in the previous round, Sinner was on court for two hours and 37 minutes in his straight-set victory over Shelton.
This was after Shelton was twice up a break in the first set including once at 6-5 as he served for the set. Sinner saved two set-points to push it into a tie-breaker which he won 7-2.
The momentum shifted dramatically after that as the defending champion broke Shelton twice in his first two service games before clinching it and then repeated the dose in the third set to win both the sets 6-2.
Can he add on to his Grand Slam tally as he takes on the beneficiary of Novak Djokovic’s injury.
Zverev Benefits from Djokovic Retirement
Alexander Zverev had made it two Grand Slam finals before this and lost both. This will be his chance to win his maiden major as he enters the title-decider round with a sterling performance throughout the tournament.
Sure, he was aided by an unfit Novak Djokovic in the semifinal but that shouldn’t take away from the fact that he has dropped just two sets in the tournament so far, against Ugo Humbert and Tommy Paul and has, by far, looked the most sorted player of the tournament.
Having entered the 2025 Australian Open on the back of a 2-0 record in the United Cup, Zverev knew his biggest challenge would come at the semifinal stage when he faced either Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz.
Fortunately for him, he did not have a lot of trouble himself getting to that stage before Djokovic ended Alcaraz’s stay in the tournament. Also fortunately for him, Djokovic suffered a hamstring tear which meant that he wasn’t at his fluent best and Zverev took advantage of that, winning the opening set in a tightly-contested tie-breaker.
Djokovic was done as soon as he had hit the volley into the net, calling it quits and with that Zverev had made the final.
He will now face his biggest test yet given what Sinner has done so far in the competition.
Sinner v Zverev Prediction
While the bookmakers have installed Sinner as an odds on favourite at 7/20 here, we think this match could be a lot closer than what that suggests. Sinner’s fitness will be crucial too with the Italian having had an issue in a match earlier, and that could also play out as a factor. Either ways, Zverev at 12/5 looks to be a tempting trade.
Sinner v Zverev Tips
- Over 3.5 sets in the match: 4/7
- Over 36.5 games in the match: 4/6
