When Dayana Yastremska kick-started the season with a first round defeat at the Brisbane International at the hands of Anastasia Potapova, alarm bells would have started ringing.
After all Yastremska had begun the previous season with a stunning performance at the Australian Open where she made the semifinals and that allowed her to climb up the rankings charts.
And despite her underwhelming rest of the season, Yastremska ended the year ranked 33rd in the world.
So a defeat first up in 2025 wouldn’t have gone down too well but she has done reasonably well after that. A quarterfinal appearance at the Hobart International followed soon after before she made the third round at the Australian Open too.
And while Yastremska dropped all those points she was defending from the semifinal appearance last year and fell to outside the top 70, she will also have a lot of points to play with for the rest of the season and a couple of solid performances could bring straight back into the top 50.

Bronzetti Grabs a Win Down Under
Following a poor start to the season which saw Lucia Bronzetti lose her openers at the Auckland Open and Hobart International, the 26-year-old went into the Australian Open with question-marks around her form.
When she was drawn to take on Victoria Azarenka in her opener, it was no surprise Bronzetti started off 13/5 underdog in that opener.
Which is why beating Azarenka in that encounter would have given her supreme confidence, more so because it came in straight sets.
While Bronzetti fell in straight sets to Jaqueline Cristian in the second round, it could give her a chance to put up a fight in the competitions to follow. Can she take down Yastremska here though?
