Having risen to a career-best ranking of 65th by the end of the 2024 season thanks to his two Challenger title wins and semifinal appearances at the Hangzhou Open and China Open, Y Bu would have expected to do a lot better at the start of 2025.
Unfortunately for him, things haven’t quite gone his way so far.
Bu started off with a difficult loss at the hands of Nuno Borges in the first round of the Hong Kong Open which went into a final set tie-breaker. He had barely recovered from that when Jan-Lennard Struff coasted to a straight-set victory over the Chinese player in Auckland.
And then at the Australian Open came his worst loss, a straight-set defeat at the hands of Hady Habib who was 21/10 odds going into the encounter.
It will be interesting to see how Bu recovers from these losses that would have, without doubt, dented some of that new-found confidence from the previous season.
Altmaier Finally Wins a Match
Daniel Altmaier will be relieved to have won a main draw match at the Australian Open after having begun the season horribly.
Having to play in the qualifiers at both, the Hong Kong Open and Auckland Open, Altmaier had fallen without making the main draw. At the latter, however, he qualified as a lucky loser only to get crushed by Roberto Carballes Baena in the opener.
Which is why a first round win over Francesca Comesana, despite it being in five sets, would have given the German some respite.
He was dumped out in the second round by Gael Monfils but now comes into this match knowing his opponent has had a worse start than him in 2025.
Bu v Altmaier Prediction
On paper this appears like it could turn out to be a close match given their form but Bu has a better record on the faster, hardcourt surfaces and we will have to go with the bookmakers for this one. Bu to win this.
