Their only previous meeting came in the 2024 Miami Open which Townsend won in straight sets.
Mertens Starts off 2025 Solidly
While Elise Mertens missed out playing in the first week of the season because of fitness concerns, she returned to feature in the Hobart International.
And Mertens did well to reach the final in that competition, beating Veronika Kudermetova on her way to the title-decider round.
There she was put to the sword by McCartney Kessler but not before the match had gone into the third set.
Mertens came back from behind to win her Australian Open opener against Viktoriya Golubic but didn’t stand a chance against Jessica Pegula, giving her a 5-2 record for the season.
Having participated in Linz last year at the same time, Mertens had made the second round there. She will hope to emulate that here along with avenging her loss to Townsend last year.
Townsend Knocked Out in First Round in Oz
Taylor Townsend did not turn up for any of the pre-Australian Open competitions that kick-start the season for most players.
A touch undercooked as a result of that, Townsend was bundled out of the season’s opening Grand Slam in three sets by Renata Zarazu despite having won the opening set.
The American, who had hit a career-high ranking of 46th in the world around August last year, has fallen back down to 82nd at the moment thanks to her struggles in the second half of the previous season – both on court and with her fitness.
It will be interesting to see how well she returns here against a player she has beaten less than a year ago.

With the kind of momentum that Mertens has, it would be no surprise that she not only starts a favourite here but also goes on to win it. Backing her to grab a victory but Townsend isn’t one of those to give up without a fight.
