Goffin Makes Horror Start to 2025
David Goffin has featured in three ATP tournaments in 2025 so far and his opening round draw has been kind to him in each of these three competitions.
And yet, at the end of them all, Goffin has played three and lost all three of those matches he has featured in.
It started with a 6-2, 6-3 drubbing at the hands of the 1/1 underdog Aleksandar Vukic in Brisbane. Following that, things went worse when Goffin won just three games in his loss to Rinky Hijikata in Adelaide.
All of that meant that when he was drawn to face Benjamin Bonzi at the Australian Open, it was his opponent who was the favourite. And Bonzi played like one too, easing through to a straight-set win over Goffin.
In essence, Goffin has played and lost three matches this year. The 2021 winner at this competition, Goffin will need to try and turn things around on a surface he has done reasonably well on over his career.
Kovacevic Makes His Way Through the Qualifiers
While Aleksandar Kovacevic is ranked a few spots below Goffin, he has managed to get himself into a decent run in 2025, albeit at the lower level.
Following losses in the first round of the Canberra Challenger and the second qualifying round at the Australian Open, Kovacevic went on to clinch his first title of the season when he grabbed the Oeiras Challenger. He lost just one set in the competition.
Kovacevic then made the second round at the Quimper Challenger before making it through to this main draw with wins over Robin Bertrand and Pablo Carreno-Busta.
He could prove to be a handful for the struggling Goffin.
