Katie Volynets v Sonay Kartal Head to Head
Volynets and Kartal have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Volynets Qualifies with Easy Wins
Katie Volynets is coming into this tournament having already beaten one British player, Heather Watson. She had brushed Watson aside in the opening qualifier before getting past Daria Saville in the second.
Those two results will come as a bit of a relief for Volynets who had earlier lost in her openers at the Hobart International and Australian Open. In both those matches, against Dayana Yastremska and Rebecca Sramkova, she had grabbed the first set, only to go down in the next two.
The good news for Volynets is that she had started off reasonably well in the season.
Wins over Erika Andreeva and Ann Li had taken her to the quarterfinals at the Auckland Open before those losses.
She has a good chance to turn things around with a main draw victory when she takes on a player ranked about 30 places below her but she would be wary…

Kartal Had a Brilliant 2024 at the Lower Level
53-9.
That’s Sonay Kartal’s win-loss record in 2024, with most of those matches played at either the lower, ITF level or in the qualifiers of WTA events.
And yet, that combined with the fact that Kartal went on to win her maiden WTA title (at Monastir) and six – yes, SIX! – ITF titles in hardcourt competitions should be enough to send the warning signs to all her opponents.
Kartal did not kick-start the season too well when she went down to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the first round of the Australian Open but has come back well here in Abu Dhabi.
She needed three sets to get past Chloe Paquet before defeating Moyuka Uchijima in the second qualifier to earn her place in the main draw.

Volynets v Kartal Prediction
Interesting to see that Kartal starts off a favourite here with bookmakers offering 8/11 for her victory. We will have to back her win here given the kind of season she had last year in which she went from 248th t0 84th on the WTA Rankings.
Volynets v Kartal Tips
