Frances Tiafoe v Taro Daniel Head to Head
Their only previous outing came at the 2022 Atlanta Open at which Tiafoe won in straight sets.
Tiafoe Needs to Do Better Than 2-2 for the Season
Frances Tiafoe is ranked 18th in the world after being 10th at one stage in his career, not too much in the distant past. And if he is looking to get to back to his career-best or better, he will know he needs to do better than what he has done so far this season.
The Dallas Open quarterfinalist at both, the 2023 and 2024 edition of this competition, Tiafoe looked to have begun the year well with a straight-set rout of Adam Walton in Brisbane but then lost to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the second.
He then featured in the Australian Open where Arthur Rinderknech first took him to five sets in the opening round before he was sent packing in the second by Fabian Marozsan.
This will be Tiafoe’s third tournament for the season where he has a straightforward opener but for the American to get some of his confidence he will need to coast to a win here.

Daniel Yet to Win a Match This Year
Taro Daniel was once ranked 58th in the world but has now fallen to 117th and that has been down to his underwhelming form last year. He has managed to carry that run into 2025 too.
Having begun the season with an appearance at the Canberra Challenger, Daniel lost to Alexis Galarneau in the very first round. Galarneau has never seen the top 150 on the ATP Rankings.
He tried his hand at the Adelaide International qualifiers and lost to Manuel Guinard, again in straight sets and then at the Australian Open, Daniel fought hard but was beaten in five by Tristan Schoolkate.
The Japanese player had featured in this tournament last year and made the second round but with the kind of form that he is and with the kind of opponent he is facing, it looks highly unlikely he would manage that again.
Tiafoe v Daniel Prediction
Despite Tiafoe’s start, we are backing him to carve out a straight-set win here over the struggling Daniel and move into the second round.
Tiafoe v Daniel Tips
- Tiafoe to win in straight sets: 4/5
