Tommy Paul v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head
Three previous matches between these two players have led to two wins for Paul (at the 2021 Stockholm and 2022 Queen’s) and one to Shapovalov (2022 Cincinnati).
Paul Gets Past Opelka
It was a match between the defending champion and the 2022 winner and in the end it was Tommy Paul who came through 7-6 (3), 6-2 against Reilly Opelka.
Rather interestingly, these two players have spent a lot of time together growing up, as compatriots and even as roommates but were facing off for the first time in their careers at this level.
And while Opelka has shown this year what he’s capable of when he is not injured – his win over Novak Djokovic in Brisbane will attest to that – Paul also exhibited signs of being at his best at the moment.
It has been known that breaking Opelka’s serve has been the toughest challenge for most players on tour, getting chances to do a notch less difficult.
And yet, not only did Paul did not face any break-points of his own, he also earned seven break-points in the match and broke Opelka twice to make it to the semifinals.
He now faces the experienced and resurgent Denis Shapovalov.

Shapovalov Stuns Machac
Denis Shapovalov isn’t the most consistent player on tour, especially as a former top 10 one.
His record this season speaks to that too, with the Canadian having lost in the first round at the Hong Kong Open and then exiting the Adelaide International and Australian Open in the second round.
Which is why, when he faced Miomor Kecmanovic in the first round, Taylor Fritz in the second and then Tomas Machac in the quarterfinals, it would have been difficult to put one’s money on him.
As it’s turned out, Shapovalov has found a way to win all three, including a shock win over the world number four Fritz and another surprise win against Machac, who is at his career-best ranking of 25th.
In a match that went on for an hour and 16 minutes, Shapovalov came back from being 2-4 down in the first set to win it 7-6 (5), 6-0 and seal his place in the semis.
He now faces yet another test as he takes on the Australian Open quarterfinalist and the second top-10 player of the tournament.
Paul v Shapovalov Prediction
Paul starts a 1/4 favourite and given how he has navigated through the tournament and the rest of the season, after having won three titles last year, puts him as the obvious pick here. Backing him to win this in two.
Paul v Shapovalov Tips
- Paul to win in straight sets: 4/5
