Amanda Anisimova v McCartney Kessler Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between Anisimova and Kessler.
Anisimova Coming off the Biggest Win of Her Career
By the time you are reading this, Amanda Anisimova would have probably broken into the top 20 on the WTA Rankings for the first time. Quite a memorable moment for Anisimova, who was once ranked 21st but had begun the 2024 season outside the top 350.
And that has been down to her persistence in trying to keep improving, something that was on display last season as well in which Anisimova had made the final of the Canadian Open – another WTA 1000 event.
This year, she’s gone one further.
At the WTA Doha last week, Anisimova stormed into the final with wins Victoria Azarenka, Paula Badosa, Leylah Fernandez, Marta Kostyuk and the in-form Ekaterina Alexandrova before routing Jelena Ostapenko in the final to clinch her maiden WTA 1000 title.
Kudos to Anisimova for that showing.
The question now is if just a day’s gap between a career-defining moment and her first round match here will be enough time for her to get back to winning matches.

Kessler Hoping to Reciprocate Hobart Success
After making it to the second round in Brisbane, McCartney Kessler announced herself to the world earlier this year when she went on to win her second WTA title in as many seasons.
Kessler triumphed at the Hobart International beating Elise Mertens in the final.
Since then, however, Kessler’s form has tapered off a little. She lost to the 21/10 underdog Shuai Zhang in the first round of the Australian Open and while she qualified for the Abu Dhabi Open, Kessler lost to Ashlyn Krueger there and then to Ons Jabeur in her Doha opener.
The American now has a tough one starting out here with the only advantage being the sheer exhaustion that her opponent might be feeling coming into this one.
Anisimova v Kessler Prediction
On paper, Anisimova is 3/10 to win this but there would be too many factors at play here – the physical exhaustion of having so much tennis the previous week including till about two days before this match and the mental fatigue to go with that and packing and travelling, along the with the sheer relief of having won a title as big as a WTA 1000 event. We think Kessler might have an outside chance here.
