Mirra Andreeva had come into her second round encounter with a straightforward victory over Elina Avanesyan in her opener. She had dropped a mere three games in the match to make it through and set up a meeting with the former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.
And while Andreeva took her time to get going against Vondrousova, once she had done that, the match went just one way.
The Russian teenager scraped through the opening set with a late break in it but then continued to get the better of Vondrousova’s serve in the second set, getting past it on three occasions to win 7-5, 6-0.
This follows Andreeva’s second round exit at the WTA Qatar last week and a first round ouster in this tournament earlier this year.

Stearns in a Comeback Win over Qinwen
While Qinwen Zheng has had her fitness concerns all of the season, she had started off a 2/5 favourite in her second round match against Peyton Stearns.
And when Stearns went down fighting in the first set after nearly one hour of tennis, it looked like the match was following the script.
There was an evident change of tempo from the second set onward as Stearns pulled back strongly, breaking her multiple times over the next two sets.
Qinwen tried to come back in the decider but failed to create any opportunities before Stearns won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to make it successive wins in a tournament for the first time in 2025.
This had followed a 7-6 (6), 6-4 victory over Ons Jabeur in the opening round.
