There have been two previous meetings between these two players with Cocciaretto winning a WTA 125 match at Tampico in 2022 while Linette edging her opponent out in Madrid last year.
Linette Return to Form Marred by Dubai Showing
After having made a poor start to the season with the Australian Open swing ending on just one win from three tournaments, Magda Linette returned to some momentum in Abu Dhabi and Doha.
She made the quarterfinal at the WTA Abu Dhabi Open with wins over Renata Zarazua and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova before falling to Linda Noskova.
In Doha, Linette had two tough wins against Veronika Kudermetova and fellow countrywoman Magdalena Frech but Marta Kostyuk then ended her stay in the tournament.
Unfortunately for Linette, she couldn’t continue in that same vein, falling to Dayana Yastremska in the very first round of the WTA Dubai.
Linette hadn’t played in any tournaments around this time following her stint in Dubai last year. She will look to use her stay here to tune up for the Indian Wells Open.

Cocciaretto Turns Things Around in Cluj-Napoca
Elisabetta Cocciaretto made a rather underwhelming start to the season as she fell to three successive opening round exits in as many tournaments.
While one would have expected Diana Shnaider to get the better of her in her opener at the Australian Open, Cocciaretto would have been expected to do better at the Hobart International and Linz Open where she lost to Veronika Kudermetova and Rebecca Sramkova.
She looks to have turned some of that poor form around when she reached the quarterfinals in Cluj-Napoca but the issue for Cocciaretto has been her inability to turn up in matches even against players who aren’t close to the top 20 on the WTA Rankings.
In fact other than winning those two matches, Cocciaretto hasn’t won a set this season, playing eight and losing all of them.
