What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the WTA Budapest Grand Prix?
Maria Timofeeva became the shock winner of the Budapest Open as she overcame Kateryna Baindl 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in the final.
None of the original eight seeds made it to the semifinal even and only one seeded player, the ninth seed Nadia Podoroska made the last four. She lost to Timofeeva there.
Top seeded and defending champion Bernarda Pera was ousted in the very first round
What made this a special title for Timofeeva is the fact that it was her maiden WTA title. Not just that but Timofeeva had also entered the tournament as lucky loser and was playing in her maiden main draw of a WTA competition.
In winning the title on WTA debut, she became the first to do so in 22 years and as a lucky loser was the first in four seasons to win the tournament.
