The Geneva Open was first held as a tennis tournament way back in 1980 and was played till 1991. It was discontinued as a main level ATP competition and from 1992 onward it became a part of the Challenger circuit.
In 2015, the tournament was brought back to life on the ATP Tour and since then it’s been played as a part of the ATP 250 series of tournaments.

In what is a huge surprise, Novak Djokovic has opted to take a wildcard for this tournament as he looked to fine-tune his ragged performance in the lead-up to the French Open. He will start as the top seed and gets a bye into the first round.
Making things even more interesting is the fact that Djokovic might face up to Andy Murray in the second round if the Brit wins his opener.
On the other side of the draw is the second seeded Casper Ruud who has also lost some of his sting and will hope to get a couple of solid performances under his belt.
The possibility that neither of these top two players would be playing in the final is a reasonable one given they would want to get things wrapped up here and fly over to Paris in time for the French Open.

What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the Geneva Open?
Casper Ruud won his third title at the Geneva Open, adding a 12th career title at this level when he overcame Tomas Machac in the final in straight sets.
The Norwegian number one, who had a first round bye, struggled through the rest of the tournament as he dropped sets to each of his next three opponents. Sebastian Ofner, Sebastian Baez and Flavio Cobolli had their chances against Ruud but he managed to keep them at bay.
This was after the top seed and world number one Novak Djokovic was done in by Tomas Machac in the semifinal, losing in three sets despite bagelling his opponent in one of them.
A delicious Djokovic- Andy Murray encounter in the second round was averted when the Scotsman lost his opener to Yannick Hanfmann.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the Geneva Open?
Casper Ruud was gunning for his third Geneva Open title in a row when he took to court for the 2023 edition but the eventual champion Nicolas Jarry put paid to those chances with a fighting, comeback from behind victory over him in the quarterfinals.
Jarry defeated Ruud 3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5 to enter the last four where he went on to stun Alexander Zverev in straight sets. In the final, Jarry usurped Grigor Dimitrov in another two-set victory to lift the trophy.
Dimitrov had ended the fourth seeded Taylor Fritz’s campaign in the semifinals earlier.
