Introduced in 2022 as a one-season tournament only, the Gijon Open or the Watergen Gijon Open as it’s also called has now been reintroduced in 2024.
In its inaugural edition, the tournament was held in October but after a year long absence in 2023, it was shifted to November.
The Gijon Open is one of the three ATP events held in Spain – four if you count the Davis Cup Finals – with the Barcelona Open and Madrid Masters being the other two. Andrey Rublev won the only previous edition of this tournament which was held in 2022.

What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the ATP Gijon Open?
While the Gijon Open wasn’t held in 2023, its first ever edition took place in 2022 and Andrey Rublev came away a champion. Rublev defeated Sebastian Korda in the final 6-2, 6-3 to lift the trophy that year.
Having entered the tournament with some form going his way, Rublev added to his 11 previous ATP title wins with a reasonably solid campaign.
He had an opening bye before Ilya Ivashka took him to three sets in the second round. A straight-set win over Tommy Paul took him to the semifinals where he routed Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the finals spot.
Second seeded Pablo Carreno Busta made the quarterfinals while the third seeded Roberto Bautista Agut was knocked out in the second round itself following an opening bye.
Andy Murray was one of the losing quarterfinalists in the event.
