The Swedish Open men’s competition, which is also called the Bastad Open or the Nordea Open right now for sponsorship reasons, is an ATP 250 tournament played on outdoor clay each year.
First hosted in 1948, it has been played on the men’s circuit every single since then with the exception of the Covid-affected 2020 season.
Currently set up with a main draw of 32 men’s singles players, the Bastad Open has seen the likes of Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander, Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev win this at least once. Local lad Magnus Gustafsson has grabbed this title a record four times in his career.
One of the best organised ATP 250 tournaments in the world, the Swedish Open has won the title for the International Series Tournament of the Year nearly a dozen times.

What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the ATP Bastad?
Nuno Borges stunned the world – and Rafael Nadal – to grab the title at the 2024 edition of the Swedish Open. In a final that failed to showcase any kind of quality, Borges eased past Nadal 6-3, 6-2 to bring home his maiden ATP title.
Nadal, who had been out of action for a while because of fitness-related concerns, made a solid dash to the final which included a four-hour long quarterfinal against Mariano Navone. It was one of the longest matches in the history of best-of-three sets encounters.
The seventh seeded Borges did not have a lot of problem getting past Andrea Pellegrino in the opening round before needing to overcome a first set deficit in the second round against fellow Portuguese player Henrique Rocha.
Timofey Skatov and Thiago Tirante were brushed aside in the next two rounds before he overcame Nadal in the final.
Defending champion Andrey Rublev’s struggling form continued as he went down in the very first match he played here – in the second round – to Tirante.
What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the ATP Bastad?
Andrey Rublev, who had gone into this tournament as the second seed shocked the top seeded Casper Ruud in the final to lift the trophy. Rublev won 7-6 (3), 6-0 to clinch the title.
It was Rublev’s fifth win over Ruud to go with his two losses and the second ATP title of the year following his triumph at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Earlier, all the top four seeds in the tournament, which also included the defending champion Francisco Cerundolo and Lorenzo Musetti made the semifinals while none of the bottom three seeds made it past the first round.
Interestingly, the 2023 edition of the tournament had 28 main draw singles players but in 2024 this number is expected to go up to 32.
