Vienna Open is a men’s tournament that was started 50 years ago, making it one of the oldest tournaments in Europe outside of the Grand Slams.

Currently it is played as an ATP 500 competition having got that status for the first time in 1996. Between 2009 and 2014 it was switched back to ATP 250 before the ATP announced that was being reverted back to ATP 500 in 2015.

Till 1999, the Vienna Open was one of the few tournaments played on carpet but from 2000 onward as the world of tennis began to get rid of this surface, it moved indoors on hardcourt.

Players like Ivan Lendl, Goran Ivanesevic, Andre Agassi, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner have all won this trophy in the past.

What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the ATP Vienna Open?

In a final between the top seeds of the competition, second Jannik Sinner overcame Daniil Medvedev to lift the trophy in 2023. In a match that tested both players equally before Sinner squeaked past his Russian opponent, he saved set-points in the opening set before winning 7-6 (7), 4-6, 6-3.

Sinner did not face too much opposition in the previous rounds though as he showed his class in getting past the likes of Ben Shelton, Lorenzo Sonego, Frances Tiafoe and Andrey Rublev in the previous rounds before clinching the tournament win.

In the semis, Sinner overcame Rublev while Medvedev defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas to set up the title-decider round.

Seven of the eight seeds made the quarterfinal with the sixth seeded Tommy Paul losing to Borna Gojo in the second round.
