The Zhuhai Championships is one of the more recent men’s tennis tournaments played at the highest level having begun in 2019. Following that, it wasn’t played for three years because of the extended pandemic-related issues in China before it made a comeback in 2023.

This will be its third edition held in 2024 and will see Karen Khachanov kick-start the Zhuhai Championships this year as the defending champion.

It’s an outdoor hardcourt competition and one of the few to be held in China as the players build towards the Shanghai Masters which will be played in October.

What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the ATP Zhuhai Open?

Karen Khachanov, who had gone into the 2023 edition of the Zhuhai Open as the top seed, went on to live up to that billing by clinching the competition. The Russian player overcame Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets in the final to win the tournament, the first time he had done so at this level in five years.

Having gone into the tournament with a first round bye, Khachanov faced his only piece of resistance in the quarterfinals when he was forced to overcome the loss of the first set against Mackenzie McDonald before winning in three.

He eased past Sebastian Korda in the semifinal to set up his title-deciding outing against Nishioka, who had earlier overcome Aslan Karatsev in the semifinal to prevent an all-Russian finale.

Karatsev had earlier shocked the second seeded Cameron Norrie while Nishioka sent the third seeded Jan-Lennard Struff packing in the quarterfinals.
