What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the Billie Jean King Cup?

Canada won the 2023 edition of the Billie Jean Cup for the first time ever after defeating Italy in the title-decider.

They grabbed the tie 2-0 with both, Marina Stakusic and Leylah Fernandez winning their respective singles matches. They defeated Martina Trevisan and Jasmine Paolini respectively to help Canada clinch a surprise title victory after they had come back from being 0-1 down in the semifinal to usurp Czech Republic.

In that semifinal, Barbora Krejcikova seemed to have given the Czech side a perfect start with a win over Stakusic but Fernandez came roaring back to stun Marketa Vondrousova in the second singles match.

The third and the final match, a doubles encounter between Fernandez/Gabriela Dabrowski and Krejcikova/Katerina Siniakova was then won by the Canadians.

Canada had earlier routed Spain 3-0 and then crushed Poland by the same margin in the group stages of the competition. Fernandez, who played four singles matches in the finals, dropped just one set in total on her way to guiding Canada to the victory.
