What Happened in the 2024 Edition of the Cincinnati Open?

With Novak Djokovic withdrawing from the tournament and Carlos Alcaraz struggling to get going and breaking his racket in the process in his match against Gael Monfils, the path was clear for Jannik Sinner to go on and add another Masters 1000 title to his kitty.

And Sinner did have to fight for it before coming through to clinch the tournament victory.

While in the final he did not have a lot of difficulties against Frances Tiafoe, he was stretched to the distance by Alexander Zverev in the previous round before eventually coming through 7-6 (9), 5-7, 7-6 (4) in one of the most topsy-turvy matches of the competition.

Sinner had been taken to three sets by Andrey Rublev too in the quarterfinals.

The women’s singles title went to Aryna Sabalenka who did not drop a single set on her way to winning her sixth WTA 1000 title. In the process she blew past Elina Svitolina and Liudmilla Samsonova to make it to the semifinal where she met Iga Swiatek.

While Swiatek started off as a favourite, Sabalenka was at her ferocious best as she downed the world number one 6-3, 6-3 to set up a meeting with Jessica Pegula in the final.

And another straight-set win over Pegula gave Sabalenka the victory.

What Happened in the 2023 Edition of the Cincinnati Open?

Second seeded Novak Djokovic bossed the Cincinnati Open in the men’s singles competition as he lost just one set in the entire tournament to clinch the trophy. That lost set, however, came in the final against Carlos Alcaraz in what became one of the best matches of the competition.

Djokovic, who had an opening round bye, was on court for just one set before his second round opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired from their encounter. He then eased past Gael Monfils in the third, crushed Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals before having some difficulties in the semis against Alexander Zverev.

In a keenly-contested final, Djokovic needed a world record breaking three hours and 49 minutes to edge out Alcaraz, needing to come back from a set and a break down and saving a match-point. He won 5-7, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4).

The women’s singles final proved to be a tame affair in comparison with Cori Gauff continuing with her excellent run which had begun at the Washington Open as she routed Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-4 in the final.

In winning the title, Gauff broke the record for being the youngest tournament winner here.

This was after Gauff had shocked the world number one Iga Swiatek in the semifinal, in a pulsating three-setter. Muchova, who was an unseeded player coming into the tournament stunned the second seeded Aryna Sabalenka in the other semifinal.
