Carlos Alcaraz hasn’t had the best start to the season but his own lofty standards but he would have even then expected not to crash out of the 2025 Miami Masters in the second round.
That’s exactly what transpired though as David Goffin came back from being a set down to upset the second seeded Alcaraz on Friday. The Belgian veteran came back in a tenacious performance to carve out a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win.
Goffin faces local lad Brandon Nakashima in the third round after the American edged past Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
In another match, Novak Djokovic managed to end his losing streak, the first time he had lost three in a row since 2017, when he overcame Rinky Hijikata 6-0, 7-6 (1) in the second round. He will face Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli in round three after the Argentine got past Alex Michelsen in a surprise result.
Also shocked on the day was Daniil Medvedev who has had a struggle all season. Medvedev, who was seeded seventh in the tournament, lost 6-4, 6-4 to Jaume Munar, who will now be up against Gael Monfils. Monfils needed over two hours and saved a match-point en route his 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (8) victory.
