The women’s 2025 Miami Open had some surprise results on Monday as Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka were upset even as Emma Raducanu also shocked the WTA Doha winner Amanda Anisimova.
Gauff and Osaka had given enough evidence in the lead-up to the fourth round action that they were favourites to advance to the last eight stage. By the time the day had ended both had been knocked out of the competition.
While Osaka is still in the initial stages of her return from her maternity leave, Gauff’s defeat at the hands of Magda Linette and in straight sets will raise a few questions about her form.
And after losing 6-4, 6-4 to Linette, Gauff admitted that her form hadn’t been great over the last few weeks and she would need to to back to the drawing board to figure things out.
Jasmine Paolini came back from a set down to overcome Osaka, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and entering her first quarterfinal of the season.
Aryna Sabalenka ended the defending champions Danielle Collins’ run in this competition with a straight-set win and will now face Qinwen Zheng for the sixth time in her career. She has won all their previous five encounters.
Zheng was a straight-set winner over Ashlyn Krueger to leave her fitness issues from the beginning of the year far behind.
In another upset of the day, Emma Raducanu got the better of Amanda Anisimova in two easy sets. Anisimova, who had sent Mirra Andreeva packing in the previous round and had earlier clinched the WTA 1000 title in Doha, won just four games in their fourth round match.
Raducanu’s win takes her to a maiden WTA 1000 quarterfinal appearance where she will take on another American in the form of Jessica Pegula. Pegula came through with a 6-2, 6-3 result over Marta Kostyuk.
Paula Badosa withdrew from the tournament before her fourth round match against Alexandra Eala. Reports suggest she had suffered a back injury because of which she couldn’t take to court.
Eala will take on Iga Swiatek who defeated Elina Svitolina 7-6 (5), 6-3 in an error-strewn contest.
