Jessica Pegula advanced to the semifinal of the 2025 Miami Open but Iga Swiatek had no such luck while Alexander Zverev was shocked in his fourth round encounter.
In what turned out to be the upset of the competition so far, the world number 140 Alexandra Eala disposed off the second-ranked Iga Swiatek in straight sets in the quarterfinals.
Eala, who had won just two matches in her entire career before she took to court for this tournament, wasted no time in sending the five-time Grand Slam winner out. She won 6-2, 7-5.
Having entered the tournament on a wildcard, Eala looked shocked at the end of the match and said, “I don’t know what to say, I mean, complete just disbelief right now and I am on cloud nine,” in her post-match interview
She will now take on Jessica Pegula who sent Britain’s last hope Emma Raducanu but not before she had been tested and taken to the third set.
Pegula took advantage of some brutally humid weather and her opponent’s fitness struggles as she carved out a 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2 win in a match lasting two hours and 25 minutes.
Raducanu needed medical attention on a couple of occasions before running out of gas in the final set.
As a result of this late finish, the men’s singles quarterfinal between Novak Djokovic and Sebastian Korda was postponed to Thursday.
Earlier in the day, Arthur Fils provided yet another upset in the men’s draw when he took down Alexander Zverev 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 while Girgor Dimitrov ended Francisco Cerundolo’s run with a 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (3) win.
